Trieste
Trieste is located in the far North-East of Italy near the Slovenian border, in the Northern part of Adriatic sea and by the homonymous gulf. The city is linked to the Austrian tradition, of whose domination still brings the marks in the refined and orderly architecture, and has its centre in the wonderful Piazza Unità: the European largest square directly in front of the sea. Let's have a walk around the streets of the city, discovering historical and literary cafès where in the past years famous poets and novelists such as Joyce, Saba and Svevo were used to meet. Let's walk up to San Giusto hill to appreciate the homonymous medieval cathedral and the Roman ruins of ancient Tergeste. Don't miss to have a round trip by the old tram that starting from the town square Oberdan leads to Opicina in the Carso, where you can have a panoramic view of the whole gulf and taste typical foods and wines.
Just outside the city you can visit the Miramare castle, planned and built in the second half of XIX century, as a demand of Maximilian of Habsburg, surrounded by a wide park in front of the sea, where you can enjoy the fresh climate thanks to the holm oaks and perhaps you can see the squirrels. It's easy to reach Trieste by train leaving from Latisana station or by car driving in A4 motorway.
